Digital independence starts with portability

Map data, accounts, domains and maintenance arrangements so you know how to move when needs change.

Digital independence does not mean hosting everything yourself. It starts with knowing who has access, where important information lives and how to take it with you if a supplier or tool changes.

Create a simple inventory for your website, domain, email, files and customer contacts: who owns each item, who can sign in, where is the backup and what export format is available? Keep organisational accounts under the organisation’s control and manage administrator access safely.

Review contracts, data export, integrations, licences and cancellation terms. Consider recovery and maintenance as well as price and features.

Privacy is part of the decision. Collect only what is needed and be clear about purpose and access. The Dutch Data Protection Authority explains that organisations must handle cookies and consent carefully; specific duties depend on how a site works.AP guidance on cookies

A short handover checklist can help: domain ownership, source files, backups, accounts, contact route and responsibilities.
